Comfort Food

Nuremberg, Germany
January 2008

We went to the zoo to see the polar bear cub, but what we got was a display of pure herbivorous affection.

Fresh from a swim, the ice bear found its favorite food. Scratching its face up and down the vegetable, the furry beast found euphoria in its late afternoon snack - which I’m glad was that vegetable and not me.

Even grown ups can be cuddly when they’re playing with their food. The cuteness almost makes you forget it has no freedom, except the freedom to snack.

I have a love-hate relationship with zoos. I have always loved animals, whether they be cute and cuddly or strange and unusual, but it can be hard to see them in cages. I try to tell myself that there is a higher purpose, such as re-population and preservation of a species. Going to the zoo is awesome, as long as I keep that thought in mind.

    Great photo, Terry!
